Is Google's AI Overview citing your product — or skipping it?

AI Overviews now sits above the organic results your PDPs spent years earning. This checker runs four live structural checks — Google crawler access, Product JSON-LD, answer coverage, entity clarity — plus a web-grounded Gemini retrieval probe, and returns a 0–100 composite with the fix guide linked from every finding.

How the AI Overview tracker works

1 · Fetch.  The checker reads the live PDP and pulls robots.txt, evaluating Googlebot, Google-Extended, and GoogleOther against that exact path — three tokens with three different jobs.~10s
2 · Parse.  Product JSON-LD is parsed field by field; prose depth, bullets, headings, FAQ markup, and entity signals (title, meta, H1, canonical) are scored deterministically.~5s
3 · Probe.  One buyer-style category prompt runs through a web-search-grounded Gemini model. Verdict: cited as a source, mentioned without citation, or not surfaced — labeled as a proxy throughout.~30s

Why a proxy at all? Because Google ships AI Overviews as a Search feature with no public API, every "AI Overview tool" on the market either scrapes SERPs (fragile, often days stale) or measures the inputs Google has documented. This checker does the second, honestly labeled: the structural checks mirror Google's own guidance on AI features in Search — be indexable, ship structured data, answer the question — and the Gemini probe adds a retrieval-grounded signal from the model family behind the feature.

How to track AI Overviews — one run vs. a schedule

One run answers one question: can this page be retrieved and cited today? Tracking AI Overviews is a different job. The feature's coverage shifts with query mix, model updates, and index refreshes, so a page cited this week can drop out next week with no change on your side. The teams that catch those drops re-test the same products on a fixed cadence and compare against history — manually, that means a weekly spreadsheet of incognito SERP checks per product, and the discipline rarely survives a month. The walkthrough at get my products into Google AI Overviews covers both the manual cadence and the faster one.

The paid eCommerce Insights product treats Google AI Overviews as one of six engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, Copilot — checked per product on every refresh, weekly on Starter and daily on Growth, with alerts on visibility drops so a lost citation surfaces in days, not quarters.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real AI Overviews query or a simulation?
Honest answer: Google publishes no AI Overviews API, so no tool can query the SERP feature directly. The four structural checks are fully live — the checker fetches your page, parses the actual JSON-LD, and evaluates the real robots.txt at run time. The fifth check is a live retrieval probe: a buyer-style prompt through a web-search-grounded Gemini model, the same model family that powers AI Overviews. The result labels it as a proxy, and if the model call fails the check is reported unavailable rather than guessed.
How do I track AI Overviews over time, not just once?
One run answers "can the page be cited today." Tracking AI Overviews means re-testing the same products on a schedule and flagging movement. The paid eCommerce Insights product does that — Google AI Overviews is one of six engines it checks per product, weekly on Starter and daily on Growth, with history per SKU and alerts on drops.
How is this different from the ChatGPT Product Visibility Checker?
Different engine, different gates. The ChatGPT checker runs live GPT-4o prompts with web search — OpenAI's retrieval is directly testable. AI Overviews is not, so this tool weights the controllable layer more heavily: Google crawler admittance, Product JSON-LD, answer coverage, and entity clarity, with the Gemini probe as the retrieval signal. Run both: a page that fails here usually fails on ChatGPT too, for the same structural reasons.
My product scored low. What do I fix first?
In gate order. A blocked Googlebot makes everything else moot — fix robots.txt first. Then Product JSON-LD with the schema generator, because schema is how Google resolves what the page sells. Then answer coverage: AI Overviews answers a question and cites the pages that answered it. Each finding in the report links the specific guide.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove my products from AI Overviews?
No — and that surprises most teams. Per Google's documentation, AI Overviews is a Search feature built on the standard Googlebot index, and Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding, not Search. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove pages from AI Overviews; blocking Googlebot removes them from Search entirely. The checker evaluates all three tokens separately so the report says exactly which lever does what.
